How do we get to Ragusa, Sicily?

Flights to London, Milan and Rome will connect you to the airport in Catania, Sicily. .You will be met by our representative at the Catania airport who will assist you with either car rental pick up or transport on the local bus line. The traveling time on the bus is approximately 1 ½ hours and the cost is under 8 Euros. You can purchase tickets upon your arrival. During summer hours, with the exception of Sundays the buses run very frequently. See www.etna.it for the schedule from Catinia Airport to Ragusa Terminal. Contessa Vacations will pick up guests at the Ragusa Bus Terminal for the 20 minute ride to Casina di Grotta di Ferro.

Do we need to rent a car?

If you like your freedom and think you might like to venture forth a car is a good idea. There are car rental offices at the Catania airport as well as Ragusa. All the major rental companies are represented. You will require a valid drivers licience as well as a credit card. An international drivers licience is also recommended although not required by all rental companies. We recommend a smaller car as the roads are narrow and parking often challenging. The roads are safe and most often two lanes. There is ample parking at Casina di Grotta di Ferro at no charge.

What is the weather like?

The sun shines down in Sicily. Weather hovers around 28-30 degrees in May to around 32-35 degrees in mid July. The humidity is high as we are very close to the sea. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and light clothing are recommended.

What if we do not speak Italian?

During your time with Contessa Vacations you will have a translator for all excursions and lessons. Although the language of the region is prominently Italian, and English Italian dictionary and a spirit of adventure will prove to be all that is necessary in most instances.

Can you accommodate my food allergies?

We are able to accommodate most food allergies however we recommend you contact La Contessa prior to booking with specific information.

What currency should we bring, in what form?

As a member of the EU the currency in Sicily is the Euro. Easily obtained using your debit card at the local banks (there is a charge of $5.00 per withdrawl) which is limited to 250 Euros per day. Travelers Cheques can be difficult to cash and time consuming at the banks. Major credit cards are accepted for shopping, however Sicily is still very much a cash society, especially at the markets.

What if my spouse/companion does not want to participate in cooking classes?

We understand that not everyone will choose to participate cooking classes. A non cooking companion is welcome to enjoy the schedule offered with exception of the classes . There are many activities in the region that can be accessed, including sailing, biking and intensive language classes.

Can we bring our children? What provisions are there for them?

Currently we do not offer programs or facilities specifically designed for children. We suggest you contact La Contessa directly to discuss the possibilities of providing child care and activities.

Can I attend as a single person or do I need to come with a group?

We believe this is a perfect holiday for the single person and encourage you to contact with any questions you might have. Single accommodations are available and what better way to make friends that cooking together!

Do I need to be concerned about safety?

Within reason we all need to be diligent when we travel. The region of Ragusa peaceful and basically crime free region.
